Hale runs PB but World Champs time elusive

Sprinter Jack Hale recorded a new personal best for the 100 metres at the Perth Track Classic but is still to qualify for the World Championships in Doha.

Speedster Jack Hale continued his stunning form with a personal best mark to blitz the men's 100 metres final at the Perth Track Classic on Saturday night.

The Tasmanian clocked 10.20 seconds with a 1.6m tailwind to shade his previous best time by 0.01 second achieved in Germany in 2016 - a month after his 18th birthday.

Hale overcame a slow start to power through the back end and claim his 11th straight victory.

However, the 20-year-old, fell short of making the 10.10 time needed to qualify for the World Championships in Doha later this year.

Rising star Jake Doran led early but finished second with a time of 10.34 and Alex Hartmann was third in 10.44.

"It's nice to get a personal best after two-and-a-half years. I came here for a (personal best) time and that's what I got," Hale said.

Earlier in the program, Queensland's Naa Anang secured a berth in the World Championships with a personal best of 6.73m to narrowly claim the long jump over rival Brooke Stratton.

The 24-year-old was in rare form with her first jump of 6.70m beating her previous best mark by 2cm.

"I was really hoping to get that world qualifier before the nationals so I'm happy to get that here," she said.

Even though she finished second, Stratton booked a ticket to Doha with a jump of 6.72m - the mark needed for qualification.
