World No.1 Simona Halep has continued her marathon Australian Open campaign, defeating Ashleigh Barty's third-round slayer Naomi Osaka to book her spot in the quarter-finals.

Just two days after grinding out a gruelling, three-hour, 44-minute victory over Lauren Davis, Halep blitzed past Japanese powerhouse Osaka 6-3 6-2 on Monday.

The Romanian has now spent just shy of eight hours on the court despite grappling with an ankle injury that flared up during her opening-round defeat of local wildcard Destanee Aiava.

"I'm really happy that I'm back in the quarter-finals," Halep said.

"I didn't expect that when I started the tournament because of the injury but today I played well and I'm really proud that I could stay focused and just (make) every point very focused and concentrated.

"I knew that she is hitting every ball very strong and I had just to move her a lot. I did it pretty well and changed the rhythm.

"Sometimes I hit stronger, sometimes softer."

Halep will face the winner of Monday night's all-Czech affair between Barbora Strycova and sixth seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-finals in her quest to claim her maiden grand slam title in Melbourne.

Osaka's deadly service game proved to be a key to victory when she sent Barty - Australia's last female hope - packing on Saturday night.

But the 20-year-old was unable to replicate that effort, sending down just five aces and registering a 17 per cent unreturned serve rate compared to 12 aces and 37 per cent against Barty.

Halep was able to dictate the tempo against her less-experienced rival, who made 31 unforced errors and only managed one break of serve.

The top seed's quarter-final berth ensures she will at least match her best result at Melbourne Park after making the final eight in 2014 and 2015.

Last year's French Open runner-up is on course for a semi-final showdown with 2016 Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber after the German defeated Taiwan's Su-wei Hsieh 4-6 7-5 6-2.

Kerber will face Madison Keys in the quarter-finals following the American's 6-3 6-2 victory over French eighth seed Caroline Garcia.

With Halep having spent more time on court than any player in her half of the draw, it's little surprise the 26-year-old is looking forward to a break.

"Actually, this tournament looks like a marathon for me," Halep said.

"The injury is still there. I still feel it. I try just to not think that much about it, try just to be in the moment and give everything because after this, maybe I will have a few days off."

AUSTRALIAN OPEN WOMEN'S QUARTER-FINAL LINE-UP

2-Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) v Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP)

4-Elina Svitolina (UKR) v Elise Mertens (BEL)
