England one-day captain Eoin Morgan says Alex Hales has "learned his lesson" from his involvement in an incident outside a Bristol nightclub.

Hales smashed a quick-fire 55 against a Cricket Australia XI in his first game back in English colours for more than three months on Thursday night after he was suspended, along with Ben Stokes, following the alleged incident in September.

The ramifications of the matter are still unknown, with Stokes yet to be told whether he will be charged by police and England provisionally naming him in the squad without playing him as they await further developments.

Hales, for his part, has been cleared of criminal charges and is seemingly free to reclaim his spot in England's top order after missing the final two games against the West Indies in September.

But Morgan said the squad and Hales had not felt any need to address the matter this week.

"Obviously there was an issue around it. He knows what he did was wrong," Morgan said.

"He's learned his lesson coming back into the side and being given another chance to prove his skills are as good and he can play international cricket at a good level."

Hales set about doing just that at Sydney's Drummoyne Oval, as the visitors played a near full-strength side that was only missing recovering captain Joe Root.

Fighting to regain his place in the team at the top of the order ahead of Jason Roy, Hales brought up his half-century in 32 balls as he whacked four fours and three sixes against the inexperienced attack.

He also took 20 runs off one Matt Renshaw over, dispatching the part-timer out of the attack after he hit him for two fours and then two sixes in four consecutive balls.

In comparison, Roy was far slower, posting 40 off 48 balls to set up England's win with nine overs and five wickets to spare.

"I thought he (Hales) went really well," Morgan said.

"I thought he stuck to the mantra of the team to be positive and aggressive when the opportunity arises and he certainly did that today.

"He wasn't hesitant at any stage. Coming in at No.3 he did that very well."
