Middle-distance star Linden Hall has smashed the 12-year-old Australian women's 1500m record at the Diamond League athletics meet in Oregon.

Hall, 27, finished sixth in a time of four minutes 00.86 seconds, stripping seven hundredths of a second from the mark set by her former coach Sarah Jamieson in Stockholm back in 2006.

American Shelby Houlihan won a red-hot race in 3:59.06, with the top four finishers recording the fastest times anywhere in the world this year.

Hall was coached by Jamieson in 2010-11 before moving to the United States to attend college.

Her previous PB of 4:01.78 was set two years ago at the same meet.

Hall narrowly missed a medal in the 1500m at last month's Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, finishing fourth in 4:03.67, less than a quarter of a second behind third placegetter Melissa Courtney from Wales.

The other standout Australian performance at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, came from fellow Victorian Luke Mathews who won the international mile in 3:57.02.

Mathews pocketed the bronze medal in the 800m at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
