Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg held talks on Friday to clear the air as tensions rise in the battle for the Formula One world championship.

"We've been friends a long time and as friends we have our ups and downs. Today we spoke and we're cool, still friends #noproblem," tweeted Hamilton, alongside a picture of Rosberg and himself riding unicycles as teenagers.

Rosberg leads the drivers' championship by four points from Hamilton, an advantage which was established with a controversial win at the Monaco Grand Prix last Sunday.

On Tuesday Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said there had been no contact between the drivers since that race.

In Monte Carlo Hamilton had appeared visibly angry with his team-mate who caused an early end to qualifying as Hamilton was closing on the german's pole position time.
