Hand in illegal fireworks: Vic Police

Authorities are appealing for people to hand in illegal fireworks ahead of Australia Day after two New Year fatalities.

As Australia Day approaches, people are being urged to hand in illegal fireworks after two New Year deaths.

A 52-year-old was trying to light a large, old firework on the NSW Central Coast about 3am on Sunday, when it hit him in the head and on Saturday night a 46-year-old man died in Victoria when a firework went off.

Three people were also treated for injuries in Victoria due to other fireworks mishaps.

"We're into summer now, we know there will be more people with illegal fireworks in the lead up to Australia Day," Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations Andrew Crisp told reporters on Sunday.

He reminded the public fireworks are explosives, dangerous and can kill.

"If you have illegal fireworks hand them in," he said.

"If you know of someone that's got illegal fireworks, report it"
