Handscomb has a field day for Victoria

A Peter Handscomb century helped Victoria to a bonus-point win over the Cricket Australia XI in the domestic one-day cup.

Australian star Peter Handscomb bludgeoned a 73-ball unbeaten century to secure Victoria a bonus-point win over the Cricket Australia XI in the domestic one-day cup competition.

In his second cup match, Handscomb whacked 10 fours and six sixes in his 103 at Sydney's Hurstville Oval to help the Bushrangers chase down CA's 9-232 with seven wickets and 11.2 overs to spare.

Warming up for next month's Ashes campaign, Handscomb was particularly dominant square of the wicket to move Victoria to third on the standings behind Western Australia and NSW, at the midway point of the 50-over competition.

"I've been feeling good lately," Handscomb said.

"It's nice to be back home playing on some good wickets out here and some nice grounds."

Despite the large win, his knock came at a crucial time for the Bushrangers, who found themselves under pressure and a little red-faced early in their innings from the inexperienced side.

He and partner Seb Gotch were joined at the wicket at 3-74 in the 17th over, after Travis Dean (4) and Cameron White (27) had gone in consecutive balls.

But the pair started sensibly before powering home at the end, with Gotch finishing the unbeaten 189-run partnership on 51 not out.

Earlier Harry Nielsen, the son of former Australian coach Tim, saved the CA XI from a potential embarrassment with a plucky 94 from 93 balls.

Victorian quick Chris Tremain (3-51) had sunk the youngsters to just 6-45 after the first 15 overs, before Nielsen led a mid-innings revival.

Nielsen hit six sixes in his innings and was supported by lower-order players Mac Wright (30) and Mark Steketee (28).

He eventually was caught at deep midwicket in the 48th over to be one of spinner Matt Short's two wickets.

Former Test bowler Peter Siddle took 2-20 off his 10 overs, combining with Tremain and Scott Boland (1-45) to prevent any CA XI top-five batsmen from scoring more than 12 runs.
