Handscomb to captain Vics in cricket

Peter Handscomb will make his Victorian captaincy debut, with Matthew Wade about to become a father for the first time.

Peter Handscomb will captain Victoria for the first time as they try to consolidate their Sheffield Shield cricket lead without James Pattinson.

Cricket Australia said on Tuesday that the Test paceman will miss the rest of the Shield season because of soreness.

Fellow Bushrangers and Australian paceman Peter Siddle was already out of action because of injuries.

The Bushrangers play second side Queensland from Saturday at the Gabba and a win should confirm Victoria will be in the final.

But the Bushrangers are coming off an upset loss to bottom team Tasmania.

Handscomb will skipper the Bushrangers because Matthew Wade is staying in Melbourne for the birth of his first child.

Rob Quiney will return from a calf injury, with Sam Harper and Ian Holland added to their 13-man squad.

Aaron Ayre joins Wade as the exclusions.

Squad:

Peter Handscomb (capt), Fawad Ahmed, Scott Boland, Dan Christian, Travis Dean, Sam Harper, Ian Holland, Jon Holland, Rob Quiney, Jake Reed, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Tremain, Cameron White.
