A hang glider has been found dead after he crashed in bushland inland of Queensland's popular Rainbow Beach, south of Fraser Island.

The 61-year-old had not been seen or heard from since 2pm on Saturday when he was forced to make an emergency descent.

An extensive air and water search was launched as it wasn't known if he came down on land or in the water.

His yellow glider and body was found by the RACQ rescue helicopter 750m inland of the ocean just before 8am on Sunday.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
