Hanson pushes for migration plebiscite

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has introduced a bill for a plebiscite on how many people are allowed to migrate to Australia.

Pauline Hanson has ramped up her push for a national vote on immigration numbers on the same day she distanced herself from One Nation defector Fraser Anning.

But the One Nation leader brushed off claims of hypocrisy after introducing a bill to parliament for a plebiscite on how many people come to Australia.

Her bill hit parliament hours after Senator Hanson condemned Senator Anning's widely condemned speech in which he praised the White Australia policy and said the "final solution" to immigration was a plebiscite on which countries migrants come from.

Labor senator Anthony Chisholm said it was surprising she pushed ahead with her plebiscite legislation given her comments.

"Senator Hanson cannot condemn Senator Anning on one hand and seek to advance this bill in the Senate, otherwise her words are hollow," Senator Chisholm told parliament.

After saying Senator Anning's comments were appalling, she said her proposed plebiscite was different.

"This bill is about immigration numbers, it has got nothing to do with the people who are coming to Australia."

An Essential poll in April reported that 64 per cent of respondents believe immigration over the past 10 years is too high.

Senator Hanson fell out with Senator Anning after two decades of friendship over staffing issues when he entered parliament earlier in the year.

After the acrimonious split with One Nation, he sat as an independent before joining Bob Katter's party.
