Harris disappointed by Siddle snub

Eyebrows may have been raised by Will Pucovski's omission but ex-Australian quick Ryan Harris felt most for overlooked veteran seamer Peter Siddle ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Rookie batsman Pucovski appeared to be the hard luck story of the day-night Gabba clash after Kurtis Patterson leapfrogged the 20-year-old to make his baggy green debut in the two-Test series opener.

But Harris was most disappointed by Siddle not getting a nod after selectors sprung another surprise and opted for debutant West Australian quick Jhye Richardson.

Siddle, 34, featured in the Australian squad in the last series against India and looked set to add to his 64 Tests with Josh Hazlewood ruled out with a back injury.

But selectors handed a debut to 22-year-old Richardson, who joined the squad last weekend on the strength of recent white ball form against India.

"I'm a little bit disappointed to be honest," Harris told SEN Breakfast radio.

"I think Jhye Richardson is a very good bowler and has definitely bowled well enough with the white ball but Peter Siddle has been there the whole summer next in line.

"You're going to have him there and ready to play if someone goes down, like they have with Josh Hazlewood, or send him back and play some cricket.

"I would have loved to have seen Pete Siddle have another go with the baggy green."

Siddle played his last Test against Pakistan in UAE last October then became the latest luckless Victorian quick to be overlooked, joining Chris Tremain.

Australian great Shane Warne believes Tremain - a member of the first Test squad against India - would feel "a bit stiff" to miss out in Brisbane but seemed most riled by Pucovski's snub.

Warne joined former England captain Michael Vaughan in slamming selectors for not blooding the youngster alongside Patterson against Sri Lanka.

"Australia has missed a trick by not picking Will Pucovski. I am very disappointed," he told News Corp Australia.

"This was a chance for Australia to build its Test team of the future around him and newcomer Kurtis Patterson."
