English international Jo Harten has been tempted north to play her trans-Tasman league netball with Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic next year.
After two years with Canterbury Tactix, mired at the bottom of the Championship table, the 1.88m shooter has signed with the 2012 champions.
Harten's unflappable temperament, strong movement and ability to shoot from anywhere bring an extra dimension to the Magic, who are in rebuilding mode after losing long-serving goal shoot Irene van Dyk to the Central Pulse.
The Magic, who have also lost midcourters Laura Langman (Northern Mystics) and Khao Watts (West Coast Fever), are entering a new phase under Australian Julie Fitzgerald after coach Noeline Taurua retired at the end of this season.
With 48 Test caps already under her belt, 24-year-old Harten has been at the forefront of a resurgent England team in recent years.
She says playing in a young and inexperienced Tactix line-up had proved challenging at times, but has helped her gauge her own ability as a player.
"I think my game's improved to a certain extent," Harten said.
"The ANZ Champs have definitely helped me to get better, but I think I've still got a long way to go in terms of where I want to be personally."
Working with Fitzgerald and assistant coach Margaret Forsyth, a former Silver Ferns shooter, was a big drawcard.
"Seeing the Magic hand over from one era, and hopefully build another, is a very exciting opportunity and to be a part of that would be great for my netball career."
Fitzgerald says Harten's calmness and accuracy will be a real asset for the Magic.
"A player like Jo is invaluable because of the variety she brings to the circle. She is capable of playing a strong holding game, providing good movement and options to her feeders and mixing this up when the game demands."
Harten joins Silver Fern defender Leana de Bruin as an experienced Magic signing, with youngsters Brooke Leaver and Samantha Sinclair also confirmed for next year's roster.
