Hastings ends final McCullum ODI dig

Brendon McCullum's final ODI innings is over, with Mitch Marsh and John Hastings combining to dismiss the brilliant opener for 47 off 27 balls.

The same two allrounders that saved Australia's blushes in Wellington have ended Brendon McCullum's ODI batting career.

Mitch Marsh and John Hastings, who shared an unbeaten 86-run stand in Wellington to guide Australia to victory in game two to level the series, combined to remove McCullum for 47 off 27 balls in Hamilton on Monday.

It wasn't the greatest looking dismissal but the visitors would have cared little given the hosts were 0-84 in the 10th over after some powerful blows from McCullum and Martin Guptill.

Mid-off Glenn Maxwell and mid-on Hastings were both uncertain about who should take the skied edge that swirled in the air.

Hastings was out of position and took his eyes off the ball to ensure there wouldn't be a collision with Maxwell.

But the Kookaburra stuck in the 30-year-old's outstretched hands, bringing an end to McCullum's 228th and final ODI dig.

McCullum was given a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd at Seddon Park.

The 34-year-old, who started his international career in 2002 and will end it after the upcoming Test series, was also given a guard of honour by Australia at the start of play.

Australia skipper Steve Smith greeted his counterpart with a congratulatory handshake.

McCullum slapped three sixes to take his ODI career tally to 200 - only Chris Gayle, Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi have more in the format.
