Seamer John Hastings is racing the clock to be fit for Australia's one-day tour of the West Indies after being ruled out of the Indian Premier League with an ankle injury.

Hastings has returned to Australia after injuring himself in warm-up before his Kolkata Knight Riders' six-wicket loss to the Mumbai Indians last week.

He played through the pain, bowling four wicketless overs before scans revealed further damage.

"He had a fair bit of scans after that, and he has flown back to Australia," former Australian batsman and Knight Riders assistant coach Simon Katich said.

"It's a shame to see his campaign end prematurely.

"Unfortunately, he'll be doing a lot of rehab instead and working towards getting fit for the West Indies tour for Australia."

Australia's first game in the tri-series with West Indies and South Africa is on June 5, leaving the 30-year-old a little under seven weeks to recover.

It's also not the first time Hastings has been forced to overcome training injuries to represent Australia in the past year.

He dislocated his shoulder three times while training for Victoria last summer, before playing seven ODIs against India and New Zealand as well as in the South African T20 series.
