Hawaiian big wave surfer Garrett McNamara has made history by surfing what has been described as the biggest wave ever ridden.

The professional big wave surfer was towed onto the giant wave off Praia do Notre in Nazare, Portugal.

The break is known for its huge waves due to a deep canyon on the seabed that captures and funnels swells from the Atlantic Ocean.

Observers estimated the wave he rode was 90 feet high.

McNamara's feat will be entered into the Billagong XXL Global Big Wave Awards, which offers prize money for the biggest wave surfed.

The previous record for the biggest wave ever surfed is reported to be held by Mike Parsons for a 77 foot wave in Cortes Bank off the coast of California.
