Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke has led a rally in western Queensland to mark Labour Day and the 125th anniversary of the Great Shearers' Strike.

The Labor stalwart, 86, was pushed in a wheelchair alongside Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk for the Labour Day march in Barcaldine, the home of the strike which was a major milestone in Australia's labour movement.

However he stood to speak and sing the workers' anthem, Solidarity Forever, at Monday's rally, which was one of many held in the state as the public holiday returned to its traditional May date.
