Hawks, Power start AFL talks on Wingard

Hawthorn defender Ryan Burton could be forced to join Port Adelaide as the two AFL clubs start to broker a deal involving Chad Wingard.

Hawthorn are reportedly willing to offload defender Ryan Burton as they seek to sign Port Adelaide star Chad Wingard.

Port confirmed late on Thursday that Wingard had requested a trade to the Hawks. Western Bulldogs were among the other clubs to unsuccessfully pursue the wantaway.

Power football manager Chris Davies insists a deal won't happen unless his team are "suitably compensated" for Wingard, a dual All-Australian who is contracted to the club until the end of the 2019 season.

Several outlets are reporting that the Hawks have already offered young defender Burton as part of a deal for Wingard.

"The club will be making no further comment until a deal has been reached," Hawthorn said in a statement.

Port insisted earlier this week that Wingard was going nowhere but acknowledged several clubs had expressed an interest in the 25-year-old.

Wingard released a cryptic message on social media last week, noting fans will hear his side of the story when "the time is right".

"Unless a statement comes from me or my management, don't listen to them," Wingard posted on Instagram.

Davies declared on Thursday that his club is no certainty to grant Wingard his wish.

"Chad has now informed us of his want to explore the opportunity that Hawthorn have presented," he said.

"However, he is also aware that unless an acceptable trade can be struck, that he will be playing for Port Adelaide in 2019."
