Wallabies back Dane Haylett-Petty will lead the Melbourne Rebels this Super Rugby season, replacing lock Adam Coleman.

The Rebels announced their new skipper at their season launch on Thursday night.

In his second year in Melbourne following the axing of the Western Force, Haylett-Petty said he was excited to take on the role.

"I'm thrilled about having the opportunity to lead the Club for the 2019 season," Haylett-Petty said.

"I loved my first year here in Melbourne and I can feel we are building something special with the group we have.

"It's feels like we're on the cusp of something special.

Melbourne Rebels coach David Wessels, who on Thursday announced he had committed to the Rebels until 2021, said Haylett-Petty was an obvious choice.

"Everyone here really values Dane's qualities as both a person and player," Wessels said.

"I'm lucky enough to have known Dane for some time and I know he is motivated to improve himself, as well as those around him.

"I'm looking forward to working more with him in the years ahead."
