The San Francisco 49ers' special teams co-ordinator says Jarryd Hayne's latest fumble was a rookie mistake and he needs to be more decisive in his role as a punt returner.

Thomas McGaughey says Hayne took too long to call for a fair catch in Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers, leading to confusion among his teammates and the fumble.

The 49ers, after three straight losses, face another tough test this Sunday when they travel to the New York Giants.
