Hayne to play a part in Legends match

Code-hopping football superstar Jarryd Hayne is keen to rub shoulders, maybe even play, with Liverpool legend Steve Gerrard in Sydney.

Jarryd Hayne is remaining coy about his mooted appearance for the Australian Legends in Thursday night's exhibition soccer match against a Liverpool Legends XI in Sydney.

Promoters are spruiking the possibility of Hayne playing a bit-part role in the second half at ANZ Stadium following his return home on Wednesday from his maiden season in the NFL.

The San Francisco 49ers recruit is a diehard soccer fan, following the Reds since he was a kid and regularly tweeting about his performances playing FIFA games on PlayStation.

It was first speculated last month that the 27-year-old was keen to suit up for the Australian Legends, with coach Graham Arnold understood to be ready to welcome the code-hopping footballer into his side.

Before getting the green light, though, Hayne needed approval from the 49ers, who retain his playing rights for the 2016-17 NFL season.

Insurers are also said to be waiting in the wings, but a six-hour delay in arriving in Sydney on Wednesday left Hayne little more than 24 hours to recover and prepare for the exhibition match.

Hayne admitted he'd be at the game in some capacity and couldn't wait to meet former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard, one of his childhood idols.

"(For) Steven Gerrard to be in Sydney, one of the all-time greats of world soccer, it's going to be a great game, great atmosphere," Hayne said.

"For me, it's just a pleasure to be out there and be in his presence."
