HAZELWOOD FACTS AND FIGURES:

* Majority owned by French company Engie (72 per cent) and Japan's Mitsui and Co (28 per cent)

* Has eight concrete chimneys, each 137m high

* Man-made pondage holds 30,000 megalitres of water for cooling before recirculating as part of plant's thermal water cycle

* Plant used lignite or brown coal sourced from nearby open-cut mine, delivered to the station by network of conveyors and concrete storage bunkers
