Hazlewood eyeing World Cup berth

Australian quick Josh Hazlewood says he would like to be thought of as a force in the limited overs formats ahead of next month's tour of New Zealand.

He hasn't been sighted in the Australian Twenty20 side for two years but towering quick Josh Hazlewood hasn't given up hope of earning a spot on the plane to the T20 World Cup.

A rested and rejuvenated Hazlewood has been included in the 14-man national ODI squad for next month's tour of New Zealand - and he's determined to make a statement about his ability in the shorter formats.

After a taxing summer in which he played all six Tests against New Zealand and the West Indies, Hazlewood was rested for the final four ODIs against India.

He has now turned his attention to the forthcoming tour of New Zealand where he's looking to add another string to his bow and press his claims for a spot in the T20 squad.

Chairman of selectors Rod Marsh says he will be monitoring the performance of the ODI side in New Zealand with the World Cup in mind - words that appear to be ringing in Hazlewood's ears.

"You use that ODI format so if you do well in that they take a look at you for T20s," Hazlewood said in Sydney on Monday.

"Any time you get to perform and perform well it's going to go in your favour.

"I enjoy (T20) and have done reasonably well over the years for the (Sydney) Sixers."

After lopsided home Test series against New Zealand and the West Indies which failed to capture the imagination of the public, Hazlewood said their tour against the Kiwis was shaping as their biggest test of the last several months.

With their loss to the Kiwis in the pool stage of last year's World Cup still fresh in their minds, Hazlewood said New Zealand were a different prospect at home.

He said he expected conditions to be similar to England, offering plenty of swing and seam, and the Australians would have to learn to adapt.

"It's going to be very tough in both formats to beat New Zealand at home," Hazlewood said.

"They play some really good cricket there. As we found in that World Cup game at Eden Park, it's a hostile crowd as well and know the conditions very well."
