Hazlewood remains in frame for World Cup

Josh Hazlewood's latest back injury shouldn't prevent him from forming part of Australia's World Cup title defence.

Josh Hazlewood is unsure when he will resume bowling but the injured quick is confident he will recover in time to vie for selection in Australia's World Cup title defence.

Hazlewood has been ruled out of this month's limited-overs tour of India and will also miss the subsequent series against Pakistan in the UAE after suffering a stress fracture in his back during the fourth Test against India.

The flare-up emerged in the same lower back area as the stress fracture that sidelined him for almost six months last year.

Hazlewood will have a follow-up scan on Friday and hopes to have ample preparation for a crucial winter in the UK which includes the World Cup and Ashes series.

"I think we'll know a lot more after tomorrow, to be honest. Hopefully in the coming weeks we'll start working through it," he said on Thursday.

"Hopefully it's going along to plan. Everything feels fine so training's coming along nicely, progressing every week. I think we'll just work back from the World Cup really and make sure everything's right for that, which gives me plenty of time."

Australia play their first World Cup group game against Afghanistan in Bristol on June 1.

The squad will assemble in Brisbane in early-May and play three practice matches against New Zealand.

Players will then head to the UK where there are official warm-up matches scheduled against England and Sri Lanka.

Hazlewood was in the XI that defeated New Zealand to claim World Cup glory in 2015 but has been restricted to just six ODI appearances since the 2017 Champion's Trophy.

"I haven't played too much one-day cricket in the last 12 to 18 months which is a bit frustrating, a bit of a shame," Hazlewood said.

"We've got three games in Brisbane in May against New Zealand and then three in England once we get over there.

"That's quite enough to be ready I think, so I'll be happy with where I'm at."

Pat Cummins will lead Australia's attack in India while fellow quick Mitchell Starc, who recently tore his left pectoral muscle, hopes to be fit for the Pakistan series.

Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson and Jason Behrendorff round out Australia's pace attack for the Indian tour.

Australia's brain trust, led by Justin Langer and recently appointed assistant coach Ricky Ponting, must also weigh up the best World Cup spin balance.

The upcoming subcontinent tours are likely to help decide whether two spinners in Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa can feature in the same XI.
