Head leads from the front for Australia A

A captain's knock and two key wickets by Travis Head has helped guide Australia A to a one-day victory over South Africa A in India.

A composed century from captain Travis Head has enabled Australia A to post a defendable total after batting first against their South African counterparts in India.

Head's well-paced 110 from 117 balls after Usman Khawaja fell cheaply proved the cornerstone of Australia A's 5-322 in their second one-day match of a quadrangular series in Bangalore.

In reply South Africa A were dismissed for 290 in the penultimate over when Head's counterpart Khaya Zondo's belligerent 104-ball 117 was ended by a run out.

The 32-run victory at M Chinnaswamy Stadium represented a significant improvement on Australia A's tournament-opening five wicket loss to India A on Thursday.

Head, who struck 13 boundaries and a six, was well supported by opener D'Arcy Short (49) and South Africa-born debutant Marnus Labuschagne, who produced a rapid 65 from 67 deliveries.

Test opener Matt Renshaw weighed in with a 29-ball unbeaten 42 and Aston Agar slammed 17 from four balls in the final over to set the South Africa A an asking rate of 6.46.

South Africa made an ominous start to the chase as openers Gihahn Cloete (50) and Sarel Erwee (37) piled on 89 in 12.5 overs before they fell victim to Head's offspin in quick session.

Legspinner Mitchell Swepson also stalled South Africa A's momentum with 3-40 from 10 overs while Agar complemented his cameo at the crease with an economical 1-36 from his maximum allocation.

Head took 2-25 from five overs.

Australia A next face unbeaten India B - who beat India A by seven wickets - in Bangalore on Monday
