The leader of a vibrant arm of the Catholic Church has made a historic visit to Australia. Major Archbishop George Alencherry's arrival was greeted with a colourful reception by members of the Sydney Syro-Malabar community.
There are approximately 35,000 followers of the Eastern rite church in Australia. Originating in Kerala, in southern India, the tradition is heavily influenced by South-Asian culture.

Major Archbishop George Alencherry said the purpose of his visit was dialogue with the Australian church and to encourage followers in Australia to be loyal in their distinct tradition, as well as to engage with the wider Australian community.
"My message is of love and communion, communion with the Church here in Australia and people at large in this country," he said.
