Heat, Stars suffer setbacks in WBBL

Brisbane and the Melbourne Stars both opened the WBBL's top four finals spots to the chasing pack when they were beaten on Sunday.

Brisbane's WBBL title hopes have taken a significant hit after being beaten by the Melbourne Renegades in a rain-affected match on Sunday.

However they weren't the only top-four team to put their season in jeopardy on Sunday, with the highly-heralded Melbourne Stars comfortably beaten by Perth in Western Australia.

After winning the toss and electing to field at Brisbane's Allan Border Field, the Renegades held the Heat to 8-125 from their 20 overs, thanks largely to off-spinner Molly Strano who claimed 3-19 from her four overs.

The match was then reduced to a 15-over match because of showers, before the Renegades chased down the amended total of 102 with one over and seven wickets to spare.

The win lifted the Renegades from the bottom of the ladder, and was the second match they've won courtesy of the Duckworth-Lewis method after they also beat the Stars in a rain-hit clash on New Year's Day.

"We're quite a shortened-game experts," Rachel Priest joked after she top-scored with 44.

"The total was always going to come down and it was always going to be quite tough."

"It was a bit of a shaky finish but we got their in the end."

The result all but consigns the Heat to sitting outside the top four with two games to go.

They have a lower net run-rate than that of fifth-placed Hobart and sixth-ranked Sydney Thunder, who meet in Hobart on Tuesday in their 12 match and are one and two points behind them respectively.

The Stars will also remain on 12 points, albeit with a superior net run-rate, after they crumbled to lose by 33 to the second-placed Scorchers at Lilac Hill.

Chasing 131 for victory, their star-studded top three of Meg Lanning (12), Emma Inglis (4) and Jess Cameron (8) all went cheaply.

Katie Mack (22) and Natalie Scriver (31) then put on a brief fightback, however Anya Shrubsole (2-9) ensured Perth would hold on.

It means the Scorchers go second with 14 points, one win ahead of the Stars but still one behind the first-placed Sydney Sixers.
