The Brisbane Heat bowlers did well restricting the Perth Scorchers and then late Ben Cutting hitting delivered them their first win of the Big Bash League season at Optus Stadium.

It was a crucial game for both teams with the Scorchers playing just their second game at home and looking for a second win in their sixth match while the Heat had lost their opening three encounters.

The Heat won the bat flip and decided to bowl first. Even though the Scorchers made a solid start through openers Michael Klinger (26 from 29) and Cameron Bancroft (24 from 26), it was relatively slow going.

Mitch Marsh struggled to 11 from 17 as well as 17-year-old Afghani spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman had the Scorchers bedazzled.

The Brisbane teenager took 2-10 in four overs and only Ashton Turner (47) got going at all for the Scorchers to help them reach 6-135 in 20 overs as all the Heat bowlers performed well.

The Scorchers have made their trademark defending small totals so getting the 136 to win was never going to be easy for the Heat.

Another teenager, Max Bryant, got going early with a quick 11 in five balls and then bash brothers Brendon McCullum (14 from 11) and Chris Lynn (33 from 34) steadied things.

But the game was right up for grabs with Brisbane 5-115 with three overs remaining, needing 21.

Enter Cutting. Facing Scorchers paceman Jhye Richardson, he smashed two sixes and two fours in the 18th over on his way to an unbeaten 26 in 16 balls to guide the Heat home with five wickets and 10 balls in hand.

"It's a huge relief," said Brisbane's star veteran McCullum who took a stunning diving catch to dismiss Bancroft on top of scoring 14 with the bat.

"Obviously to go three in a row to start meant we were behind the game and then to travel all the way over here to Perth and arrive yesterday, and turn up to play in front of a huge crowd and get the win is an exceptional show of courage from the boys.

"Hopefully this sets us off for the rest of the tournament."

Nathan Coulter-Nile, fresh off being left out of Australia's one-day squad, was the star for the Scorchers with 3-25 in three overs.
