Heavy fog causes delays at Sydney Airport

Heavy fog blanketing parts of Sydney has caused flight delays and diversions at Sydney Airport but conditions are expected to clear into a sunny day.

Heavy fog has blanketed parts of Sydney causing flight delays and cancellations at the Australia's busiest international flight hub.

Dozens of flights have been delayed and up to ten domestic flights cancelled at Sydney Airport because of heavy fog on Saturday morning.

But the heavy fog is expected to clear across the city over the next few hours, Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Gabrielle Woodhouse said.

"We have been seeing visibility down to 200m at times," she said adding Richmond and nearby areas were still experiencing thick fog.

Outer western Sydney has been the worst-affected area, but the heavy mist is already starting to clear for much of the city and towards the airport.

Cool temperatures, a clear night and moisture in the air were perfect conditions for fog to form, which is not unusual for this time of year.

Some international flights have been delayed by 30 minutes and travellers have been urged to check departure times with their airlines.

A Qantas spokesman said the airline had three flight diversions and minor delays but no international cancellations.

Virgin Australia said they expected delays in and out of Sydney until early afternoon and advised passengers to check their online flight status page for information on their flights.

"Delays are expected to ease by early afternoon," the airline said in a statement.
