Heavy rain may mean floods in northern NSW

Heavy rainfall in northern NSW could cause flooding, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Heavy rain is expected to drench parts of northeastern NSW over the weekend, with some towns bracing for flash flooding.

A weather system developing off Queensland on Friday afternoon is forecast to deliver a deluge to the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast over the weekend and into Monday.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Katarina Kovacevic said the NSW Flood Warning Centre had been activated.

"We're expecting rainfall to peak on Sunday and the first part of Monday in association with the potential for a trough to move from Queensland further south into NSW," Ms Kovacevic said.

Ms Kovacevic said due to the nature of the weather system, it was still unkown exactly what areas would be most affected.
