Liam Hemsworth has returned to what remains of his Malibu mansion destroyed by California's horror wildfires.

The Australian actor and his singer-actress fiancee Miley Cyrus bought the home in Malibu's exclusive Ramirez Canyon for $US2.5 million two years ago.

Hemsworth, described by Cyrus in a tweet as the "love of her life", managed to save himself and the couple's animals, including horses and pigs, before the fire swept through on the weekend.

Cyrus is in Africa shooting a movie and made frantic calls to her father, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus, when news broke California had erupted in flames.

"As it unfolded Miley began calling, we talked it through and I told her, 'Honey, prepare yourself for the worst' and unfortunately worst did unfold," Cyrus told LA TV station KTLA on Monday.

TMZ showed video of Hemsworth and his brother Luke, both wearing face smoke masks, driving on a golf cart along the Pacific Coast Highway to visit the remains of the home.

The massive fires have forced road closures guarded by police and sheriffs and residents who remain have to don the masks and respirators because the smoke has made the air quality so poor.

The coastal celebrity-filled coastal strip of Malibu was one of the worst hit, with actor Gerard Butler, rock icon Neil Young, reality TV star Camille Grammer and musician Robin Thicke also losing homes.

Melbourne-born Hemsworth, 28, and Cyrus, 25, met in 2009 on the set of the romantic drama film The Last Song.

Ramirez Canyon is an exclusive area of Malibu with multi-million dollar homes perched on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

"Completely devastated by the fires affecting my community," Miley Cyrus wrote in a tweet.

"I am one of the lucky ones.

"My animals and LOVE OF MY LIFE made it out safely & that's all that matters right now.

"My house no longer stands but the memories shared with family & friends stand strong.

"I am grateful for all I have left."

She thanked firefighters and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for their help in fighting the fires and urged her fans to donate money to fire aid and disaster relief organisations.

Billy Ray Cyrus added there were so many people in California worse off than his daughter and Hemsworth, including the residents of Paradise in northern California where at least 29 people were killed and almost 7,000 homes and structures destroyed in what is the worst fire in the state's history.
