Hend miss leaves 8 Aussies in British Open

Eight Australians are in the field for the British Open at Carnoustie in Scotland this week.

Eight Australians will test their nerve in this week's British Open at Scotland's treacherous Carnoustie layout after Scott Hend's late bid for entry fell short.

World No.9 Jason Day and No.18 Marc Leishman lead the contingent, which includes Adam Scott, Matt Jones, Cameron Smith, Brett Rumford and debutants Lucas Herbert and Cameron Davis, who will tee up on Thursday.

However, veteran Hend won't be joining them at Carnoustie after a costly stumble at the Scottish Open on Sunday.

Hend went into the last round at Gullane one shot off the lead and well placed to claim one of three British Open berths available.

But he could muster only an even-par 70 that dropped him to tied 14th as South Africa's Brandon Stone rocketed to a four-shot victory with a closing 10-under-par 60 to reach 20 under.

Stone will be joined in the British Open field by runner-up Eddie Pepperell and Jens Dantorp of Sweden who tied for third.

Smith continued his British Open preparation with a 68 as he tied 42nd at seven under.

The most northerly course on the British Open rota, Carnoustie hosts the Open for the eighth time and first time since 2007, when Ireland's Padraig Harrington won.

It has a well-earned reputation for being the toughest venue, with the closing four holes providing many dramatic Open moments.

They include the unforgettable scenes in 1999 when Frenchman Jean van de Velde blew a three-shot lead at the last hole before Paul Lawrie won in a three-man playoff.
