Movie star Mark Wahlberg has apologised after claiming he would have fought Islamic militants, safely bringing down one of the planes which crashed in the September 11 attacks.

'If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn't have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, 'OK, we're going to land somewhere safely, don't worry', he told Men's Journal.

Wahlberg was reportedly scheduled to fly on flight 93, which crashed into a Pennsylvania film after being hijacked.

But angry comments in the media from relatives of those who died prompted a quick response from the action-movie star.

'I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention,' he told celebrity site TMZ.

'To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible', he said.

'To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with.'
