The heroic actions of a young man has helped save the life of an elderly man whose home was destroyed in Brisbane overnight.

The Coorparoo home went up in flames around midnight with the male owner stuck inside.

His neighbour Jesse Blake says he broke down the front door and led the elderly man to safety.

The man was taken to Greenslopes Private Hospital with chest pains.
