Hertz to refund damage charges

Car rental firm Hertz has undertaken to make refunds to consumers whom it improperly charged for damage to rental vehicles.

Car rental firm Hertz will refund customers improperly charged for damage to vehicles.

The competition watchdog says that from 2013 to August 2015, Hertz had incorrectly charged some customers for damage to the hired vehicle when, in fact, that damage was pre-existing. It also didn't pass on repair discounts.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on Tuesday said Hertz had acknowledged that its conduct was likely to have been misleading and had undertaken to refund affected consumers.

"This case serves as a message to vehicle rental companies that they must have robust compliance procedures in place to ensure they do not contravene the Australian Consumer Law by incorrectly charging customers for damage they are not responsible for," ACCC deputy chair Dr Michael Schaper said.
