Hewitt rejects match-fixing claims

Lleyton Hewitt has hit back at claims of match fixing as 'absurd' and 'an absolute farce' following his retirement from the game.

Following his exit from his 20th and final Australian open, Hewitt launched a scathing attack on an online blog linking him to a report from BBC and BuzzFeed News, which claimed that 16 top players had been suspected of involvement in fixed matches but never faced action.

Sports blog Show Legend went on to publish the names of 16 players supposedly identified by BuzzFeed, with Hewitt among them.
The former Wimbledon winner called these allegations "an absolute farce" and "absurd".

"I think it's a joke to deal with it. Obviously, there's no possible way. I know my name's now been thrown into it," he told reporters at the post-match press conference.

"I don't think anyone here would think that I've done anything [like] corruption or match-fixing. It's just absurd.

"For anyone that tries to go any further with it, then good luck. Take me on with it.

Hewitt was the youngest male ever to be ranked No. 1 in the world in singles, at the age of 20.

Among his career highlights were the 2001 US Open win and Wimbledon the year after.

He also was a member of the Australian teams that claimed Davis Cup honours in 1999 and 2003.
