A new report highlights the need to further narrow the gap between the death rates from heart disease among Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The research was conducted by the University of Western Australia and the Heart Foundation.

It found that Aboriginal people experiencing their first heart attack or hospitalisation for certain heart conditions were on average 15 to 20 years younger than non-Aboriginal patients.

Report author, Dr Judy Katzenellenbogen, says the study's results reflect on the health status of Aborigines around the country.

She spoke to Zara Zaher.
