The Northern Territory has brought together a high-powered team to spruik the region's business and lifestyle opportunities to national and international investors.
Former Northern Territory chief minister Clare Martin will be part of the three-member Team NT along with former senior government official Paul Tyrrell and prominent businessman Dick Guit.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the Territory needed to grow and create more jobs.
"We are going through a tough economic period and we can't do it alone. We need investment from outside," he said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Team NT will seek out prospects to boost our economy, create jobs, grow our population."
But Country Liberal Party leader Gary Higgins said by bringing in Ms Martin, the chief minister was admitting he was not up to the task of "steering the failing Territory economy back to prosperity".
"Despite having a large team of elected representatives as well as heads of departments, Labor now has to employ consultants to do their work for them," Mr Higgins said.
"The chief minister has allowed the Labor government to drop the ball on the Territory economy."
Mr Gunner said Team NT had been given three main tasks: to bring more corporate offices to Darwin, to use the area's existing offshore gas reserves to bring more manufacturing to the region and to improve air and sea links with Asia, including Indonesia and Timor Leste.
"A strong, coordinated approach for international engagement is critical to growing jobs, attracting people to live in the NT, building infrastructure and promoting the NT," he said.
