The 22-year old university student, Darsh Patel, was hiking in the woods with his friends when they were approached by a black bear in West Milford, US in September this year.
But instead of leaving, the group stopped and began taking photos of the bear.
Chief Timothy Storbeck of the West Milford Police said the bear was approximately 300 feet (91 metres) away.
Police recently released the five photos that Patel took on his camera before he was mauled to death by the animal.
In the photos, the black bear is seen standing behind a fallen tree in the woods. The hikers turned when the bear kept approaching, but the animal eventually caught up with the group.
