Hillary Clinton has arrived to witness the inauguration of the man who defeated her for the presidency of the United States, Donald Trump.

Clinton accompanied her husband, Bill, the 42nd president of the US.

Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in a brutal and bitter campaign, says she's attending Trump's inauguration to "honor our democracy."

"I'm here today to honor our democracy & its enduring values. I will never stop believing in our country & its future," she tweeted.

Trump and Clinton were last face to face at a charity dinner in New York in October.

The Democratic nominee and former secretary of state waved to reporters when she arrived for the ceremony on Friday morning, but did not answer questions.

Former presidents George W Bush and Jimmy Carter are also attending the the swearing in ceremony.

However, 92-year-old George H W Bush is unable to attend after being hospitalised this week with pneumonia. His wife, Barbara, was also admitted to the hospital after falling ill.

Trump and his wife Melania spent the morning at a church service, followed by the traditional private meeting of outgoing and incoming presidents and their spouses at the White House.

They arrived at the Capital about an hour before the official swearing in.

Meanwhile, crowds on the National Mall - where people without tickets can watch the inauguration - are growing steadily despite the rain..

But less than two hours before the swearing-in, there are still wide swaths of empty space.

There are strong suggestions that the crowds will not match Obama's first inaugural eight years ago.

Some people were prevented by security barriers from getting closer to the Capitol despite having plenty of space in front of them.

The grass on the Mall was protected by white plastic and there were some muddy spots amid intermittent rain.
