Crossbench senator Derryn Hinch has used parliamentary privilege to name and shame a "piece of scum" former pedophile police officer in the hope of bringing closure to victims.
The convicted offender, whose name remains suppressed, abused nine boys and girls aged as young as five while working as a policeman in Melbourne and NSW in the 1960s and 1970s, Senator Hinch said in a speech to parliament on Tuesday night.
"I'm going to tell you a horror story tonight -a real life nightmare - about a five-year-old girl raped with a gun held to her head, raped almost daily," he said.
Mr Hinch said he hoped naming the man would bring closure to victims, some of whom were present in the upper house gallery during the speech.
"(One victim) approached me recently and asked me to name the (man) who stole her childhood and her siblings' innocence, as well as the innocence of those other kids," he said.
"The community deserves to know the name of this man, whose (victim) has accurately described as a 'monster'."
Senator Hinch said the officer was moved to NSW after the mother of one child complained to the force.
He was arrested in 2012 and sentenced to 17 years in jail before being extradited to Melbourne, where he was sentenced to 19 years in 2016, the senator added.
"I say tonight, may (he) rot and die in jail," Senator Hinch said.
