Crossbench senator Derryn Hinch has used parliamentary privilege to claim a Brisbane primary school covered for one of its teachers after he was convicted of sexually abusing a student for several years.

Senator Hinch said the Christian school gave the year two teacher long service leave and allowed parents and students to continue believing he is on leave, even while he is behind bars.

AAP has decided not to name the school or the teacher.

Senator Hinch told parliament on Tuesday night the school did have the teacher's licence suspended after he groomed the young boy and sexually abused him for several years before being charged in 2015.

But when a concerned parent told the school he planned to tell other parents the truth, he was threatened with legal action, Senator Hinch says.

"That school has a duty to inform parents who that teacher is, what he's been doing and why he's taken leave," he said.

"Maybe alert them in case there are other victims as well, and there probably were."
