Broadcaster Derryn Hinch will plead not guilty to contempt of court charges relating to the Jill Meagher case.

Hinch, 69, is accused of publishing details about Ms Meagher's killer, Adrian Ernest Bayley, on his blog and on Twitter in April, which defied a court order at the time.

Hinch appeared briefly in the Victorian Supreme Court on Tuesday where his lawyer David Gilbertson said his client would plead not guilty to two counts of contempt of court.

The broadcaster says he believes his trial will be a test case for social media and court orders, and expects to be jailed if convicted.

"I'm being used as an example over social media," he told reporters outside court.

"In the Jill Meagher case ... some of the excesses were some of the worst you've ever seen over a court case, and some people on social media went way beyond what was legally or morally responsible.

"I wasn't one of those people."

Last month, Bayley, 41, of Coburg, was jailed for life with a non-parole period of 35 years for the rape and murder of Ms Meagher.

Hinch will reappear in the same court for a two-day trial on September 23.
