An abandoned historic Brisbane building has been destroyed by fire.

Nine fire crews continue to battle the blaze that has spread throughout the two-level heritage-listed building on Edmondstone Street, South Brisbane.

Firefighters are working to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings, including the Greek Club.

The Department of Community Safety says the fire is being treated as suspicious until otherwise determined.

The building is known as the Belvedere and was a boarding house before it became abandoned many years ago.
