A man, 31, and a woman, 56, have been arrested after a Fiat 500 hit a 53-year-old pedestrian who was thrown into the air by the impact at Montague Place in the Kemptown area of Brighton.

Sussex Police announced the pair's arrest on 26 January, 12 days after the incident occurred.

Sergeant Dan Pitcher said the man is in a stable condition after the Fiat "drove off leaving the victim for dead".

"The pedestrian, a man from Hove, suffered serious head injuries and is thankfully making a recovery."

CCTV footage that captured the moment of impact also shows fellow pedestrians crowding around in disbelief.

The 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing serious injury, attempting to pervert the course of justice and aggravated vehicle taking.

The 56-year-old woman was arrested for perverting the course of justice.

The pair were still in custody at the time of publication.
