Hitman scam prompts AFP warning

The AFP says people should ignore emails warning that a hitman is after them.

Don't worry, a hitman isn't after you.

Any emails saying so are a scam, and an unsophisticated one at that, says the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in a renewed warning on Facebook.

The scam is regular and well-known, the AFP says, having previously been circulated via text messages.

The key point is not to reply to the email. Doing so confirms your email address to the spammers, which encourages them to target you with more emails in future.

Subsequent emails will likely be more sophisticated with links and attachments that could infect computers with malware.

The best policy is to simply press delete, the AFP says.
