Fire crews have brought under control a blaze in suburban Hobart that burned within metres of homes.

Residents of Lindisfarne on the city's eastern shore were put on alert on Wednesday afternoon when the fire quickly swept through bush on Natone Hill.

The fire was under control by about 8pm and an advice alert remains in place.

A watch-and-act warning was in place more than three hours after the fire started about 4.25pm, with some 25 hectares burnt.

Crews will remain on scene overnight to patrol the fire ground.

Hobart was part of a total fire ban for southern Tasmania on Wednesday as temperatures nudged 30C.
