Treasurer Joe Hockey is aiming to take the promise of tax cuts to the next federal election.

He says while there won't be any individual tax cuts before the election due next year, "certainly we'll be taking a proposal to the Australian people", he told Network Ten on Sunday.

Many average wage earners are being pushed into the second-highest tax bracket just through wage inflation, while the top tax rate sits at a hefty 49 per cent.
