Australian Ambassador to the US Joe Hockey has appeared at the White House to speak with US President Donald Trump's top two advisers to mend the allies' relationship after a turbulent week.

Hockey spoke with Trump's chief of staff Reince Priebus and senior adviser Steve Bannon on Thursday, the White House announced.

The meeting comes a day after the Washington Post reported Trump and Turnbull had a fiery phone call over the US-Australian asylum seeker deal struck last year with the Obama administration.
