Outgoing Treasury chief Martin Parkinson has been praised for encouraging the greater involvement of women under his leadership.
Treasurer Joe Hockey launched a case study on Tuesday by Chief Executive Women, which found women in the federal department account for 33 per cent of senior roles, which is up from 22 per cent in the past three years.
The number of women at entry level also increased from 45 per cent to 52 per cent.
Mr Hockey paid tribute to Dr Parkinson, who will leave the public service in the next couple of weeks, saying he is a man of great personal integrity and not afraid to stand up for what he believes to be right.
"There is no evidence that better illustrates that than this report into Treasury," Mr Hockey told an audience at Parliament House on Tuesday.

"He has worked hard into changing the culture of an organisation that is not always easy to embrace cultural change."
Dr Parkinson said the shift was not about an individual but the entire organisation responding to change.
The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women, Michaelia Cash, said this was more than just a policy.
"You have made substantial headway ... in what you set out to do," she said.
