Hockey resigns, by-election date to come

Joe Hockey has formally resigned as the member for North Sydney, triggering a by-election.

Speaker Tony Smith has received former treasurer Joe Hockey's letter of resignation as the member for North Sydney.

Mr Smith said in a statement on Friday he was considering possible dates for a by-election.
